Welcome to these pages, whether you're one of the people I met at the Mind, Body, Spirit event, or a spiritual seeker surfing.
At these events there are lots of beautiful and caring opportunities, but in essence they're all pointing towards a type of spiritual power.
In a world without spiritual power, our lives are shaped by nothing more than the random collisions of atoms set in motion by the Big Bang. As atoms clustered into living organisms, genetic codes have evolved which, in a world without spiritual power, are what determines our characters and capabilities. We have difficulty understanding why our existence was fashioned by chaos - material theories do not help us make sense of what it means to be a human being.
We therefore look beyond the material to give us explanation of our lives, and perhaps control of our lives. Over the centuries, theories and practice have explored how bodies and substances, terrestrial and celestial, can demonstrate non-physical relationships between each other In parallel to this, religious theories developed, proposing the existence of invisible supernatural beings who controlled the operation of the world and to whom pleas – accompanied by sacrifices - could be made to improve the lot of individuals.
The Christian religion has had over two thousand years to reflect on the message of its originator. That message was essentially one about the nature of God, the Father constantly referred to by Jesus. At one point Jesus explains to a listener “The hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father .. when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth”. This, and many related passages, seeks to lead humanity away from seeing God as an Old Man in the Sky, or even, in its form updated 20 centuries later, as an Infinite Mind behind the scenes. In other words, we don't look for God in the sky, or beyond the material universe – we look for him in the spirituality of our own being. Another saying of Jesus is “The kingdom of God is within you”
A clear vision of this concept came over 100 years ago in the Christian Science movement, established by Mary Baker Eddy in the New England states of the USA. The vision made sense to a host of people from all backgrounds, who were able to demonstrate its practical benefits in healing and improving their own lives and those of others.
The pioneering vigour of the movement's early days stands to be rediscovered; the truth it represents is eternal and available to all of us, right now. In essence it is not a religion of comforting words, but one of spiritual power.
